This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating Malaysian culinary expert and founder of London-based Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar, Mandy Yin. In 2013, after almost a decade of practicing corporate law, Mandy burnt out. After taking a few months off to reassess what was important to her, she found her way to food.

Trading courtrooms for food markets, Sambal Shiok began as a humble street food stall. After recognising a gap in the market for a Malaysian burger, the cult Chicken Satay Burger was born, and by 2015 Sambal Shiok’s concept was evolving; from pub kitchen pop-ups to a critically acclaimed restaurant.

Fast forward to 2024, Mandy has had a baby, released a cook book (Sambal Shiok: The Malaysian Cook Book) and makes frequent appearances on reputable TV cooking shows. Mandy reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams; “There’s no one day that is the same, and all together I am involved in food. And that’s my one true love, has always been”.

Though Mandy’s career is ever changing, there is one thing that has remained the same; the importance of presentation. “Synergy between what I look for in my clothes and my cooking; I really need them to be hard working and be able to take me from day to night. Like a great blazer I can wear to work as well as going out to a party. Presentation is just really important”
