The Designer

As a celebration of our 50th birthday we approached designer Lydia Hannon, a specialist in the luxury accessories sector, with the brief to design an iconic collection of forever handbags for Jigsaw, inspired by our heritage and celebrating the finest craftsmanship.

Lydia has extensive experience collaborating with brands to establish and evolve their accessories handwriting. She has an extensive knowledge and long-standing relationships with the finest craftsmen, factories and materials. Her background includes working with Burberry, Jimmy Choo and Smythson.

Lydia’s appreciation for contemporary and considered design is evident throughout her work, and runs throughout her collection for Jigsaw. Her passion for the artisanal process, attention to detail and craftsmanship combine to create modern classics.

Q: What inspired the collection?

For me, Jigsaw has always been a brand offering paired back, timeless wardrobe staples with a twist, essentially, it's a very British brand. When I was approached about working on the collection, I wanted these elements to come through and to really tell the story of the brand; combining craftsmanship with modernity to create a collection of everyday wearable pieces.

Q: Can you describe the design process?

Once I find inspiration it's a question of developing ideas and building them out into my design process. For this collection I was particularly inspired by a selection of vintage equestrian pieces that I found at Kempton antiques market, one of my favourite places to visit. What I loved about the items is the story they told and it led me to research further into traditional English craftsmanship, specifically looking at saddlery and equestrian detailing. This inspiration can be seen in details woven throughout the final products, such as the exaggerated contrast stitching, bridle style leathers and bespoke moulded hardware, the attention to detail combined with everyday practicality gives the collection a British heritage touch, yet remains modern and relevant.

Q: Which is your favourite piece from the collection?

I think like a lot of women I'm often switching bags depending what I'm doing and ultimately, I often end up carrying more than one. For that reason, I love the hands free practicality of the Denbigh crossbody, it's perfect for weekends when all you really need is your phone, card and keys and the security of the lock closure gives added piece of mind. It can even be worn around your waist like a bumbag.

As my Monday - Friday bag it has to be the Warwick tote. It's one of those great 'throw it all in' styles and the added benefit of the double strap option makes it easy to style across seasons with thick winter layering. It's an investment piece that's practical without compromising on style.
