Travel Talk with Claire Menary

With an AW18 collection inspired by exploration, who better to catch up with than photographer and travel influencer, Claire Menary. Documenting her travels as she goes; we talk about her love for exploring, her ideal type of holiday and find out where is on her bucket list.

What is your most memorable trip?

I’m lucky to have been to some incredible places but I think my most memorable trip was the one that I did at the start of the year to India. It went straight up there as my favourite trip to date as I had always wanted to visit India and it was every bit as incredible as I’d hoped.

Where is top of your bucket list right now?

I’m quite in-decisive so there are many places on my bucket list, all of which are at top at one point or another. Iceland, Budapest, Peru, Australia, Puglia, Lisbon, Hong Kong are just a select few. But I’m still not done with exploring India and there are quite a few parts of Africa that I would really love to go to (I’ve only seen Morocco and Cape Town so far, both of which I loved).

When did you first discover you loved to travel?

I was lucky enough to be taken on holiday a lot as a child so got to travel quite a bit from a young age. The excitement of getting up early, going to the airport, flying and reaching a new destination still thrills me now. There was a time - when I was working for other people - that I didn’t get the chance to go on many holidays, it might only have been one long weekend break the whole year! But since working for myself, I’ve been hugely fortunate with opportunities that have come my way, to travel quite a fair bit. I consider it making up for lost time!

When packing your suitcase, what are your top five fashion essentials?

Sunglasses - I have so many pairs. Comfy sandals - easy to wear, that look good and will withstand the amount of exploring you’re set to do. A throw on pair of shorts - ones that go with everything and are minimal fuss. Holidays are all about the relaxed life. A straw basket bag - perfect for throwing in all the beach essentials and chic enough for a city escape too. An oversized shirt - you can wear it by the pool, tucked into shorts or thrown on in the evening when things cool down.

What is your favourite place in London?

I love the beautiful parks we have in London, we’re very fortunate to have them on our doorsteps. I live close to Clissold Park in Stoke Newington which is so wonderful and there’s also Victoria Park which is not too far away - ideal for a Sunday stroll (there’s also a great little foodie market on there every Sunday). You also have the likes of Battersea Park and Richmond Park that are easily accessible and well worth spending a few hours over the weekend exploring.

Fast-paced city break or chilled week in the countryside?

A fast-paced city break followed by a chilled week in the countryside, please. It’s important to have both, preferably one after the other!

Staycation or holiday abroad?

Again, both. There are plenty of beautiful parts to the UK that are worth exploring and equally I love discovering places further afield. During the summer however, I actually do a lot of staycationing. Partly because it’s nice to make the most of the weather in the UK when it’s enjoyable but also, I really hate going away to a new destination only for it to be swarming with crowds - I much prefer traveling abroad off season!
