Your Guide to Buying a Coat

Everything you need to know before choosing your winter coat

7th October 2016

If there’s one investment to be made this season, it’s a coat. But a good one will not come cheap, so consider the following before you buy…

The Fabric

Fabric quality is key. Choose yarns that will keep you warm and look as good as they feel. This season, we celebrate provenance, sourcing soft wools from some of the finest mills in Italy and Britain.

“When it comes to fabric for this season’s winter coats, wool is the king of fibre”, says our menswear designer, Claire Smith.

“Unlike synthetic fibres like nylon and polyamide, it is an active yarn which reacts to changes in body heat to keep you super insulated; almost like a built in climate control. Also, the coil-shaped fibres give the fabric natural memory, maintaining the shape to keep it looking sharp. For coats to hunker down in this winter, invest in wool.”

The Fit

“Fit should always be a defining factor when investing in a new piece of outerwear; we cut and tailor ours in Europe”, says our menswear buyer, Tom Saunders.

“With the exception of oversized silhouettes, such as our Fox Brothers Glen Check (coming soon), the fit across the shoulders is a good place to start. Secondly, think about what you will wear the coat with; if layering over fine gauge knitwear or shirts, you can go for a neater fit. If wearing with a suit, make sure you allow room for these extra layers.”

The Style

A coat should pull everything together; it’s the finishing touch to an outfit. Pick a design that looks good with polar opposites. Whether it’s a reliable crew neck T-shirt or a formal shirt, it’s important that your coat works with almost anything from your wardrobe.

Features to look out for are single back vents, smart collars, horn or corozo buttons and a longer length.

If you happen to be looking for something strictly casual, it’s the opportunity to make a statement. Opt for a style short in length and experiment with texture and details. Large patch pockets, quilted pieces, poppers. Anything goes.
