Escape with Mr & Mrs Smith

Escape and explore in style with Mr & Mrs Smith and Jigsaw

20th December 2016

We caught up with Richard MacKichan, editor at boutique hotel experts Mr & Mrs Smith, to plot some escape routes perfect for winter exploring; from crisp cities to snow-dusted forests.

Treehotel, Norrbotten County, Sweden

We already owe the Swedes big time – who doesn’t love Pippi Longstocking, H&M, Daim bars, Absolut Vodka, Abba or Ikea? Visit this cinematic Scandi hideaway and you’ll realise there’s still more to thank the Swedes for: snow-sprinkled forest, husky-drawn sled rides, rustic Nordic cuisine, a possible peek at the Northern Lights (best enjoyed while dining in a heated, torch lit tipi on a frozen lake – no, really) and, crucially, the chance to stay in the world’s most inventive treetop dens.

101 Hotel, Reykjavik, Iceland

Talking of the Northern Lights, you’ll be in with a good chance of seeing their green glow from this Icelandic base, too. Unlike the sky, everything here is understated with a monochrome colour palette to match. Other than the hardwood floors, shades and textures of black and white dominate, from the inky, lacquered, folding headboard, to the exceptionally soft white, pale-grey Quagliotti sheets. This contemporary crash pad is perched at prime city-gazing height, perfect for surveying snowy Reykjavik rooftops.

Hotel Panache, Paris, France

Nancy and Lee may have sung about a Paris summer but there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about the City of Lights when there’s a chill in the air. Namely, wrapping up warm, taking your lover’s hand and leading them down Rue Geoffroy-Marie to this retro Rive Droite retreat. Inside, you’ll find the comforting good looks of a mid-century jewellery box: velvet upholstery, bevelled mirrors and understated brass accents throughout. Outside you’re perfectly placed for wintry walks north for Montmartre’s boho charms, east for a hipster fix along the canal, south for a culture hit in the city’s museums and west to give your credit card a workout on the Grands Boulevards.

Hotel Panache Paris

Foxfire Mountain House, Catskills, USA

This once-abandoned inn made our hearts flip like local Sweet Sue’s pancakes. We love its Scandi-lously good styling, generous breakfasts, the bocce ball court, the hammocks, the horseshoes, the bleached-wood beds fashioned by local carpenters, the butterflies, antlers, tiles and taxidermy, the jaw-drop views and the head-clearing country pursuits around moody and majestic Mount Tremper.

New York Edition, New York, US

Polar vortexes notwithstanding, the New York City skyline rarely looks better than when it’s haloed by a low-lying winter sun. The New York Edition, with its clubby Gold Bar, cosy Clock Tower restaurant and fire-lit lounge areas, is just the place for curling up in cold-season – and being smack-bang in the middle of Midtown, whatever you choose to fill your New York minutes with won’t be far away.
